You can start reading Chinese as soon as you know about 150 characters. Use short texts written for your level, where you already know almost every word, and read a little every day. That’s how characters stop being shapes you memorise and start being words you recognise.<\/p>\n

When should you start reading Chinese?<\/h2>\n

Earlier than most people think. Once you know roughly 150 to 300 characters (about HSK 1), you can read graded texts written for that level. You don’t need to wait until you “know enough”.<\/p>\n

The one rule: read at a level where you understand almost everything<\/strong>. If you’re stopping to look up more than about one word in twenty, the text is too hard, and reading turns into decoding. Drop a level and you’ll learn faster.<\/p>\n

How to practise: a 4-week plan<\/h2>\n
